Chucky’s Back! “Child’s Play” Sequel Now Casting!
Guess the reboot-remake isn’t happening. I’m glad Don Mancini is 1000% involved in this! He was initially up for a remake of the original. Studios own the rights to a product for x amount of years a lot of times, and like with “Hellraiser”, they can commission their own shitty sequels/prequels without the consent of the creator. I think “Child’s Play” might have been facing issues over who owned the rights a few years back, but I may be mistaken.
When I first saw the headline, it read, Studio Makes Bastardized Version of “Child’s Play”. Thank god that isn’t the case! Everything’s back in order. No Jennifer Tilly, or seed of Chucky either. GREAT! Get that crap outta here!
What goes up, must come down:
There’s a downside to all this, this film is a direct-to-dvd sequel. I’m interested in hearing the reasoning behind this. Does the studio not have confidence in a new Chucky movie? Are they giving them a limited budget for this film? If done right, Chucky could easily be revitalized into a box office success, with a slew of new installments to follow. Christ, look how much they money they threw at that crapfest “Tron Legacy”! Hollywood is run by a bunch of doofuses today.
Back a few years ago, the initial lowdown on what was to be expected in the remake of “Child’s Play” included word that producers were keen on changing Chucky’s look, aiming to give him a more contemporary appearance. Chucky was inspired by My Buddy of the 1980s. Most people either don’t recall the toy, or weren’t even born at the time. I can’t help but think that a remake would probably have moved “Child’s Play” into more serious, boring terrain, completely ditching the camp and comedy that made Chucky so lovable in the first place.
Side note: Don Mancini is gay, as is Clive Barker, and Kevin Williamson. Who knew that so many gay men were behind the horror genre?
Mitchell Lichtenstein, writer and director of “Teeth”, a film about a woman’s monster vagina, is also gay. That one was pretty obvious.
From Bloody Disgusting:
[OMFG] ‘Child’s Play’ Sequel Begins Casting! It’s The ‘Curse of Chucky’!
We’ve learned that casting is currently underway for Universal Home Entertainment’s Curse of Chucky, which will begin shooting in Winnipeg, Canada in September!
Franchise creator and writer Don Mancini will write, direct and produce. The best news is that Brad Dourif is back once again to voice the role of the killer doll (who has the soul of Charles Lee Ray trapped inside).
In the fifth sequel, a family gathers for a funeral, only to be met with an insane bloodbath caused by the infamous Chucky. The question is: what is the “curse” the titles eludes to?
As previously reported, the new sequel will be a throwback to the original Child’s Play trilogy, meaning less shenanigans and more bloodshed. Unfortunately, it looks like we won’t be seeing the busty and beautiful Jennifer Tilly in this one.
The cast will include the characters Nica, Ian, Barb, Jill, Sarah and Father Frank. Nica is a young wheelchair-bound girl who receives the doll; Ian is the father and Nica’s brother-in-law suspicious his wife is cheating on him; Barb is a mean-spiritied and greedy woman, Nica’s older sister; Jill is the lead and is a nanny having a secret affair with Barb; Sarah is Nica’s mother whom commits suicide.
Dourif introduced Chucky into the world in 1988′s Child’s Play, which was penned by Mancini. The franchise has spawned four sequels, Child’s Play 2, Child’s Play 3, Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky.
FWIW, “Child’s Play 2” is my favorite Chucky movie! What’s yours?
